Huawei could launch its second tri-fold phone next year

The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate was the world’s first tri-fold phone. According to leaker FixedFocus (via Huawei Central), a successor may arrive as early as mid-2026. This follows the international launch of the first model last month.

According to the tipster, the second-generation Mate XT is expected to resemble the original model but will feature an improved camera system and improved Kirin 5G chips. A better display panel is also anticipated. The current model launched with a three-lens arrangement and Kirin 9010 5G chipset. The Mate XT runs on Harmony OS and offers various RAM and storage options. It also has a 5,600mAh battery.

The Huawei Mate XT signified a significant advancement in foldable smartphone technology. Its most notable feature is its ability to unfold into a 10.2-inch display, which offers a tablet-like experience perfect for multitasking, streaming media, and productivity tasks. The device also retains the convenience of a foldable design that allows it to be compact and easily portable.

The phone’s single screen measures 6.4 inches, while its dual screen is 7.9 inches.

Tri-fold phones are still in their early stages, but that may change soon as companies like Samsung are expected to enter the market. Rumors suggest that the maker of the Galaxy S25 Ultra is developing its first tri-fold phone, which could be launched as early as this summer.

Huawei’s Mate XT features a single flexible panel that folds inward, while Samsung’s tri-fold device is anticipated to fold inward from both the left and right sides.

Samsung was the first to deliver a folding phone for consumers in the Galaxy Fold back in 2019, so the South Korean company has now been making folding phones for 6 years. It's expected to announce the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Galaxy Z Flip 7 later this year, but we might also see a tri-folding flip phone at some point in the future.

A patent that was spotted by Android Headlines has been filed showing a device with a z-shape design, featuring two hinges. Currently, the Z Flip 6 simply folds in half to offering a compact form factor when folded and a typical-looking smartphone when unfolded.

With saturation in the segment, brands are now looking to stand out with tri- and multi-fold devices, especially after Huawei launched the unimaginably thin triple-folding phone. While the usual intent with a tri-fold is to expand the phone to a foldable-like footprint, one brand is taking the opposite route and using it to make the phone more compact.

Infinix, a phone brand that's huge in Asia, Africa, and parts of Eastern Europe, just teased a concept of a tri-fold phone that folds down to a tiny palm-sized layout. Instead of a book-style foldable, Infinix is choosing dimensions similar to a flip phone. But instead of folding twice, this one folds thrice, for a minimal layout.

Samsung confirms its next budget phone is just around the corner

Samsung has confirmed that the upcoming Galaxy A series — the A36 and A56 — will be unveiled on March 2. While it didn't mention the Galaxy A26, multiple leaks suggest it might also make an appearance.

Last week, these three phones appeared on the Chilean Samsung Service website. That told us they were likely coming soon, but didn't provide an exact timeframe. Samsung will debut the phones on March 2, and they will likely be available for purchase shortly after.
