The GPU supply is so acutely short that the retailers have to resort to opening a lottery system to sell NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 5090 & 5080 GPUs.
Japanese Store Nagoya Osu to Distribute Lottery Tickets to Sell the First Batch of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 GPUs
The GPU shortage for the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 & RTX 5080 cards is so severe that one retailer is selling lottery tickets to sell customers the GPU. It's not a lottery that will give away the GPUs for free, but instead, users will have to pay the full price for these cards after winning the lottery tickets.
This is perhaps the first time we have seen such a severe shortage of GPU supply on the launch day. We have been hearing about such reports in the past few days and have reported on this issue multiple times, which indicates that most users won't be able to buy the cards, let alone at the MSRP.

The account @GW_Nagoyaoosu posted a marketing infographic for the Nagoya Osu store that lists the conditions being eligible to purchase a GPU from either the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 or RTX 5080 stock. As per the information, the sale of the GPUs will start on 31st January at 11:00 AM. Users who will line up at 10:20 AM will get lottery tickets. After the winners are announced, they will be allowed to select one GPU of their choice.
Regarding sales methods for RTX5090 and RTX5080 The next-generation GPU will go on sale from 11am on January 31st and will be sold by lottery at the Nagoya Osu store. Raffle tickets will be distributed from 10:20am. Those who are in line by 10:20 will be entered into the lottery. We will inform you of the items and quantities in stock after 11pm on January 30th.

At the moment, there is no information on how many GPUs the store has received for each SKU, but it's obvious that these are only a handful, since NVIDIA didn't supply much to its board partners and distributors all around the world. This has resulted in inflated prices in some regions, and we have already seen that some custom AIB editions can cost several hundred dollars more than the Founders Edition cards.
It's unlikely that the availability will be fixed in a couple of days and will take weeks or probably a few months before it gets to normal. Whatever the case is, we don't encourage buying these GPUs at inflated prices since the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 don't bring an impressive price-to-performance ratio compared to their predecessors.
The RTX 5080 reviews are already out and, just as we reported previously, the card is indeed slower than the RTX 4090. Both the GPUs, i.e., the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 will hit the shelves tomorrow at MSRP of $1999 and $999 for the Founders Edition respectively.
